Day Walk
16
set off to work off the excesses of Christmas with a walk from the
Hall to Tegfynydd, via the new bridge recently completed by the
volunteer group. The return was a bit longer as we passed the Mill,
now awaiting conversion into a dwelling, to Glan Taf, and then back
to home. A frosty morning but at least it was dry under foot. A
commentary was provided from the History Society on many of the
features that we came upon as we walked around.

Foot Bridge open
The
footpath from the Plash to Tegfynydd farm has often suffered from
the middle section becoming impassable due to the ground being waterlogged.
Local
volunteers in conjunction with Carmarthenshire County Council have
after a long struggle completed a bridge over the ditch along side
the wet ground.

Children
in Need
Friday
25th November the Games Night Children held a "Children in
need" evening. £324 was raised and has been
passed on.
Twmpath
Carreg
Las Ceilidh Band entertained a mixed crowd in the Millennium Hall
on Saturday 19th February. A bit more energetic that usual evenings,
but very enjoyable, and in no small part down to the skill of Lyn
the caller and her musicians. Entertaining Arts in your Community
supported by The Arts Council of Wales / in partnership with Carmarthenshire
County Council.
History
Society Book
The
Llanfallteg History Society have decided to produce a book of their
findings on local history.
In general it will be based on material that the society has already
investigated and produced, but improved to be in a readable book
form. In parallel a CD disc will be produced to contain not only
the book, but also a more extensive record particularly of details
such as census records, that make up the society findings.
The members have committed themselves to the production of this
book with the minimum of external assistance, so watch this space
to see how the task progresses.
The Society usually meets on the third Wednesday of each month in
the Millennium Hall, but does arrange trips and visits that may
take them away. New members are most welcome.
Whitland
and District Male Voice Choir
came
to The Millennium Hall on 15th of November and entertained us with
a program in three halves. A very near full house in The Hall listened
to an excellent program of Welsh, English and American singing including
three songs better attributed to Elvis. Clive "the Bus"
Edwards popped up at half time as the soloist, and demonstrated what
a very fine voice he has. To conclude they sang "Amen" in
their own style, and to prove a point without their conductor, but
they did keep the Old Hall Joanna going.
The
third half came after they retired to The Plash for celebration, and
here they proved without doubt they needed neither conductor nor pianist,
just "Bells". A great evening for everyone.
Foresters
leave at last
Popular
and well know visitors from Monmouth, Mike and Silv Powell, who have
been encamped in The Plash caravan field for the past five years finally
moved on to pasture new at Mount Pleasant.
Huge
Crowds, a brass band, flags and gallons of tears saw the sorrowful
departure towards the end of October.

Steam
Trains come to Llanfallteg Film Society
On
15th October the Society showed it's first ever train film, the first
of many planned. The show featured the Flying Scotsman on it's tour
of Australia in 1998 and 1999 for the Centennial Celebrations.
A
dedicated and high quality team shot the whole sequence just for
the film, which showed the preparation in the UK, loading and shipping
the loco by sea from Tilbury Docks as well and miles and miles of
wonderful Australian scenery.
An excellent opener to what we hope will be a more and more popular
event.
Future showings will cover travel from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth
by steam train in the 1960's, steam into Brecon in 1960, Railway
Roundabout 1958, partly on the Cardi Bach.

The
National Arbouretum village trip
The
Llanfallteg History Society arranged a trip to The National Arbouretum
at Westonbirt in Gloucestershire on Sunday 23rd October. The cost
of the transport was subsidised from the prize awarded by the Gardens
Gateway Trust to the Society for their written report on the visit
last spring to Llanerchaeron.
The week before the visit had had mixed weather with heavy rain bringing
the Taf out onto the Meadows all around, but forecasters predicted
that Sunday was going to be fine and sunny.
The day dawned on a morning that had seen rain. Things looked up when
Endaf Jones sent over one of his newest smart coaches for us, and
at 08.30 some 20 of us were off. Bit of drizzle here and there, counting
blue and silver cars and then snap, all passed the journey quite quickly.
Suddenly the coach stops in the middle of nowhere. It's the end of
the traffic jam waiting to get in. Thousands and thousands all flocking
to look at a "Garden of Trees". We had already booked with
discounted group tickets and coaches had a special parking spot near
the centre, so we were in quickly! Next to us was a Coach from Keighley
in Yorkshire, so we missed out on the most distant visitor prize that
day.
Off we went. Off into the trees, and what a sight it all was. If you
want to be bored with the details of how and why history presented
the Nation with this wonderful asset, come to the History Society
meetings. The foresight of one man 200 years ago, coupled with a lot
of good fortune leaves this lasting living memorial for us all to
enjoy.
Hundreds of photographs were taken, and some by cameras that cost
thousands of pounds. Some have been seen in the press, but most not.
My favorite is here, "Euronmus Alatus 'Winged Spindle' "
Many flocked to see the Acers, and there is no doubt that did present
a fine sight. One of our party who is enthusiactically setting out
her garden is covering it with Acers. Hundreds she says. So maybe
in a hundred years there will be a flock of visitors coming to see
the "Garden of Trees" in Llanfallteg.

Artefacts
Evening
Llanfallteg History Society held an Artefacts evening on Saturday
13th November in the Millennium hall. Stuart Fry, a stone wall builder
by trade, a collector and also a bit of a TV personality was invited
to come along with part of his vast collection of bits and pieces
from the past and show them off. Many hundreds of items came along,
mostly Agricultural or Horticultural in origin and all displayed in
the Hall.
He
gave us an introduction into his way of life and the starting of
his collection of "junk", and then went on to discuss
some of the more unusual items on display. John Donovan won the
competition - what are these 10 items used for.
A
very interesting evening, and many thanks to Stuart and his sister
Nikki for putting the show on.
Do
you know what all these tools and bits were used for?
