FIELDS, WALLS AND HEDGES
Stuart Fry gave a fascinating talk in Llanfallteg Millennium Hall on 27th October. Using his experience as a top dry-stone waller he described how the pattern of our fields had been established centuries ago and then modified when the Enclosure movements changed ways of farming.
With slides he showed how stone walls differed according to the type and availability of local stone and whether the walls were designed with deer, cattle or sheep in mind.
He then showed a variety of artefacts from his collection including carved stones from abbeys, old cart wheels, roofing stones and parts of a crashed aeroplane which he had come across during his walling work..
Finally he gave his views on the fields and landscape around where we live, using maps and his knowledge, demonstrating how many of our house and farms are how and where they are now and have been perhaps for hundreds of years..
The evening was arranged by the Llanfallteg History Society.
