Life Goal Overview

To become self employed running my own business either from home or location and create my own working hours.

What inspired me to do this?

I didn't like being employed or being enrolled in pointless college courses the college 'thought' would be best for me. I wanted to create my own destiny and path through life and I wasn't going to do that in a dead end job limiting my aspirations and creativity. There probably are more elements like my stubbornness and dislike of being told what to do, but overall I think I was just meant to be the one driving and that's that.

Planning & Details

Decide on a business idea that can work from home, possibly serviced based. Do all the required business planning and look at how to enter the market through advertising and networking.

In 5 words how do I feel now?

I want the day off!

The Story

My self employment officially began way back in 2001 though between 1998 and then I was part of a Young Enterprise company organising music gigs. In 2001 a group of friends and I setup a Limited company to continue the work we'd done through Young Enterprise. The company was called Inner Rhythm Promotions and organised music events across West Wales until 2010.

M4 West host Pendulum at The Queens HallInner Rhythm hosted major music events in West Wales, hosted act's include; Pendulum, Goldie, Mickey Finn, John B, BK, DJ Ramos to name but a few.

Inner Rhythm also ran a event called M4 West, which became massively popular with their debut gig hosted by Pendulum, one of the worlds most well known Drum and Bass acts. A division of M4 West still operates (2011) in M4 West Recordings operated by Tyre Trax records.

Graphic Design - Sohpie Ellis Bextor FlyerAside from this and more towards being Self Employed I setup my own Website Design business in 2004. It covered graphic and web design and over the years built up it's services very well. The business traded under Jamie King Media and had a strong customer base in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.
Graphic Design - Sophie Ellis Bextor Flyer reverseI setup my own design studio from home in a converted out building, fully customised right down to the shape and finish to the desk's and colours on the wall.

Being self employed isn't easy, its great, but it's not easy. Motivation and cash flow can be a major issue and if your not 3 steps ahead of your self you risk difficult times in the weeks to come. I wouldn't change my position for the world, the ability to leave the office at 13:00 and go kayaking or cycling truly shows the benefits of a good self employment.
But you have to put the hard graft in somewhere, even if that is 6 months of working till 4am and being stuck in front of a PC screen.

I doubt I could ever take an employed job, if I could I'd find it very difficult to begin with. Self employment is right for me, it's not right for everyone.
